With Priti Patel’s inquiry, we may never know!
Following the shocking murder of Sarah Everard by serving police officer, Wayne Couzens, the Home Secretary announced that there would be a “public inquiry” because the case had exposed "unimaginable failures in policing". The aim of the inquiry, she said, was “to give the independent oversight needed, to ensure something like this can never happen again.”
We, of course welcomed an inquiry, but it soon became clear that what Priti Patel proposes is not the statutory inquiry that is needed.
The terms of reference of the Angliolini inquiry were published earlier this month which confirmed the inquiry would be non-statutory and limited to actions leading to Sarah Everard’s murder only. Any wider second part of an Inquiry will only take place based on what arises from that first part. This is despite calls by CWJ and supporting organisations to widen the scope to rout out systemic issues and ensure such a tragedy is not repeated.
