Zahra

‘Zahra’, an Egyptian woman on a spousal visa, had a young baby and spoke no English. Her abusive husband was Egyptian British.

One day, he assaulted her with a chair and threw her to the ground. She threatened to call police but he called them first and told them she had kicked him in the groin and that she had been violent previously.

She was arrested, but she didn’t have the language to explain the situation. She was left in custody overnight.

Eventually she was released due to insufficient evidence to charge her. However, her daughter had been left with father and she had to fight to get her back.
