Defeating the Silencing of Women Speaking Out About Sexual Assault

  • Oxford House Derbyshire Street London, England, E2 6HG United Kingdom (map)

We are hosting an exciting panel discussion exploring the battles women have fought to overcome attempts to silence them.

CWJ Director, Harriet Wistrich will chair the discussion with panellists:

Nina Cresswell – who courageously defended a libel action brought against her by tattoo artist, Billy Hay, and won a landmark judgment in April 2023 which defended her right to speak out about him sexually assaulting her.

Verity Nevitt – Co-founder of the Gemini Project, a campaigning and advocacy non-profit organisation for survivors of sexual violence, who herself faced and fought libel action – currently researching the use of civil litigation to silence victims.

Jennifer Robinson – Barrister who acted for Amber Heard in assisting The Sun to successfully defend the UK libel action brought by Johnny Depp and co–author with Keina Yoshida of ‘How Many More Women: The silencing of women by the law and how to stop it’.

Zelda Perkins – Whistleblower in the Harvey Weinstein case featured in ‘She Said’ and co-founder of Can’t Buy My Silence, a campaign to stop the misuse of NDAs, which is successfully changing legislation and regulation internationally.

The discussion will be followed by a screening of the biographical film ‘She Said’, starring Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan. The film tells the story of the two New York Times journalists who investigated and exposed movie producer, Harvey Weinstein’s decades long campaign of sexual assault and harassment against women.
